When I started my quest of a natural beauty journey I started with all my bathroom product, especially with my hair care. Going back to natural can be messy as you hair will detox from all the nasty chemicals but the reward is so worth it. Now my hair are healthy, so shiny and it is way easier to take care of them. So what do you need to do? As you know I have an holistic approach so in this article, I'll be sharing some tips and tricks for a natural hair routine that promotes holistic health and beauty.
1. Start with a healthy diet
I have to start with a focus on your diet. What you eat has a direct impact on the health of your hair, skin and nails. You have to be careful on your portions and have at least half of your plates full of vegetables then add your protein, carbs and healthy fats.
You can't expect to have healthy hair & skin if you eat processed food and snack all the time. Focus on 80% wholefood, fresh and local and 20% what I like to call "Soul" food.
Don't forget to drink plenty of good quality water to stay hydrated. Maintaining hydration is key to healthy and shinny hair.
2. Use natural and organic hair products
You know I only use natural and or organic options as they are free from harsh chemicals and toxins. It is better for you and the planet. I also try my best to choose reusable or compostable packaging. But to start with, focus on natural and organic ingredients.
Read the ingredients list and don't trust a label stating it is natural. There is more and more green washing and you have to double check by reading the ingredient list. Be sure to read labels carefully and avoid products with sulfates, parabens, and other harmful chemicals.
Read my blog post on 10 toxic chemicals to avoid to know more. As a general rule, if the ingredients list is really long with super complicated ingredients, you can pass to choose another one. Look for natural ingredients like castor oil, coconut oil, olive oil and essential oil like rosemary are great options.
3. Follow a regular hair care routine
Give your hair a break, try to space your washing to one or twice a week. Try to find a routine that works for you, your hair type and lifestyle.
Some people may need to shampoo more frequently, while others may benefit from less frequent washing. Include some mask once a week or more to hydrate and nourish your hair. I will have some more tips on the best masks to do for different hair type.
4. Avoid heat
Leave your hair be! Stop overheating, curling or straighten your hair. From time to time, it is ok to change style or for a special event. But on a day to day basis, it is best to avoid them as they damage your hair and lead to breakage and split ends.
5. Stress management
Last but not least, stress can lead to hair loss and it is super important for your overall health to find some practices to reduce your stress. You can try yoga, meditation, breath exercise, journaling, going to the gym, have a bath... anything that can help you relax.
Focus on those simple steps to start with and you will see your hair improving quickly.
I will share some more tips and tricks with basic natural ingredients to help you on your natural hair care journey. You are doing great, be patient and continue to take some time to take care of your hair and yourself.
